Edvard Grieg: 6 Poems by Henrik Ibsen

Image
by Georg Predota, Interlude Throughout his life,   Edvard Grieg   (1843-1907) composed a total of 181 songs. That means that excluding folk-song arrangements, Grieg composed more vocal music than piano and chamber works together. From his   4 Songs   Op. 2 of 1861 to the   5 Poems   Op. 70, published in 1900, these compositions detail all the high and low points in his development as a composer. Leipzig Connection Edvard Grieg, 1858 As Grieg famously stated, my songs are “written with my life-blood.” His early music clearly reflects his studies in Leipzig, and he only discovered folk music in the mid-1860s. Image
by Georg Predota , Interlude The music of   Anton Bruckner , born as the son of a schoolmaster and church organist in Ansfelden near Linz on 4 September 1824, still strongly resonates today. Yet he was more than just an artist, he was a visionary. One of the most innovative and creative figures in the second half of the 19th century, Brucker is primarily remembered for his symphonies and sacred compositions. A solitary man, preferring the rural surroundings of Upper Austria to the urban environments of Linz and Vienna, Anton Bruckner remains an enigma, even as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birthday.  Ancestry and Study The Bruckner family lived in a small, isolated farming community for over four centuries. His grandfather was a broom-maker, and just like Schubert, Anton was a schoolmaster’s son. H...
