Julie Kuok - her life and her music

 



BIO

Julie Kuok

Born in Hong Kong, Julie is currently a piano faculty member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. She is a jury member of many piano competitions and has shared many musical ideas in masterclasses and in the RTHK Radio 4 program “ABRSM Piano Exam” where she was hostess from 2014-2016.

After graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Royal Academy of Music, Julie formed a piano duo team with pianist Hui Ling known as “HK Duo” promoting music for piano duo and adding to the repertoire with her compositions and arrangements. Apart from collaborating with local and international musicians, Julie has also appeared as soloist with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, the Nanjing Philharmonia, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia, the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra and the Xinjiang Philharmonic Orchestra.

Julie is a member of the Chinese Woman Composer’s Association. She has been commissioned to write for special events like, the 20th and 30th Anniversaries of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the 60th Anniversary of the Hong Kong City Hall, and the 40th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, etc., through which some of the rare works were born, like “Tableau for 48 hands”, “Merry Collage 3x” for 20 hands on 5 pianos, and “Mahjong on Stage!” for 4 pianists on 4 pianos synchronising with a movie video on mahjong games.
