"The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore!" is a cover of a Frankie Valli song, co-written by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe. The Walker Brothers' version of the song is widely regarded as a classic and more successful than Valli's version. The Walker Brothers were not actually brothers, but a Los Angeles trio. They tried their hand at the song with a different production team, and their version rose to No. 1 in England and No. 13 in the United States. The Walker Brothers were an American pop group that achieved significant commercial success in the 1960s, particularly in the United Kingdom. The trio consisted of Scott Engel (who later changed his name to Scott Walker), John Maus (who later changed his name to John Walker), and Gary Leeds (who later changed his name to Gary Walker). Despite the name, none of the members were actually brothers. Scott Walker was the group's primary vocalist and is regarded as one of the most revered innovators at the sharp end of creative music, whose influence on many artists has been freely acknowledged. The scope and dynamism of his vision have added dimension to both film and dance, and he has stunned audiences with music whose composition transcends genre and whose sheer originality defies pigeonholing.

Carl Loewe - his music and his life

 Carl Loewe, (born Nov. 30, 1796, Löbejün, near Halle, Brandenburg [Germany]—died April 20, 1869, Kiel, Prussia), German composer and singer who is best-known for his songs, particularly his dramatic ballads.

Loewe began to compose while still a choirboy in Köthen and completed his musical training in Halle. He frequently toured Europe singing his songs with great success, and in Vienna he was called “the north German Schubert.” Although he wrote operas, oratorios, and much instrumental music, today he is almost exclusively known for his songs. Among these the most-admired include settings of Goethe’s Erlkönig, the Scottish folk ballad “Edward,” “Herr Oluf,” “Archibald Douglas,” and “Tom der Reimer.”

22 Nocturnes for Chopin

This new anthology is a result of EVC Music’s #CallToWomenComposers worldwide search for talented but not yet published women composers and includes new piano works by twenty-two women composers inspired by Chopin’s Nocturnes.

The project was initiated by Rose McLachlan, talented daughter of Scottish pianist and pedagogue Murray McLachlan, as part of her Masters degree. Applications were open to women composers aged 14+ and EVC Music received over eighty pieces in a variety of styles from romantic to experimental. The pieces were selected blind: the selection committee was presented with ‘nameless’ scores, and sixteen pieces were chosen in addition to six pieces commissioned from established women composers.

Chopin dedicated almost all of his piano works to a woman; for example, his Op25 Etudes are dedicated to Marie d’Agoult, and other works were dedicated to female friends or talented students. Thus, this new anthology of piano music by women composers completes the circle, as it were.

The featured composers are from the UK, Ukraine, Israel, Poland, Canada and the USA. Most have not been published before; some have contributed pieces to exam syllabuses; each brings their own authentic voice to their music, and the result is a varied collection of music of intermediate (cGrade 6) to advanced level (cGrade 8).

Many of the pieces display the typical characteristics of Chopin’s Nocturnes (and indeed John Field’s before him), with flowing, arpeggiated accompaniments, songful, lyrical melodies embellished with ornaments, fiorituras, improvisatory or cadenza-like passages, and chromaticism. The harmonies are in general consonant, with some unexpected piquancies or key shifts which add interest and character to the music. Interestingly, almost all the pieces are scored in a minor key. Some feel very close to Chopin’s originals, and the uninitiated listener could be forgiven for thinking some of these pieces are actually by Chopin. This may be because some are directly inspired by specific Nocturnes (e.g. Nos. 8, 13, 19, 20), while others are influenced by other works by Chopin or by Bellini’s Bel Canto arias, which inspired Chopin himself (e.g. No. 12 Triste by Victoria Proudler). Some take their inspiration from literary or poetic sources and the natural world (e.g. No. 17 Waves Collide with the Precipice by Charlotte Botterill); a handful take a rather more leftfield approach, incorporating more ambiguous or atonal harmonies and rhythms inspired by ragtime and jazz (No. 22 by jazz pianist and composer Zoe Rahman). All are infused with the nostalgia, poignancy, and Zal of Chopin’s music.

This is an interesting and attractively produced anthology, with clear engraving on thick cream paper. A QR code links back to the publisher’s website with information about the composers and brief notes on each of their Nocturnes, plus audio links to listen to each one.

As an introduction to the Nocturne genre as well as an anthology of brand new piano music for intermediate to advanced students, this is a welcome addition to the repertoire and a useful resource for teachers and students who may wish to study attractive contemporary Nocturnes alongside Chopin’s originals.

An epic night of live classical music for Classic FM Live at the Royal Albert Hall, with hits from the Hall of Fame brought to life by the brilliant Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Classic FM Live with Viking returned to the Royal Albert Hall for another epic night of live classical music.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Classic FM’s Orchestra in North West England, raised the roof with a series of hits from the Classic FM Hall of Fame.

The orchestra was joined by star soloists Arsha Kaviani, Luka Faulisi, Miloš Karadaglić, and Lucy from The Piano, all united under the baton of conductor Jamie Phillips, for favourites from the Top 300.

The concert was hosted by Classic FM presenters Alexander Armstrong and Myleene Klass, and every note was recorded so you can relive all the magic of the evening on Friday 20 October at 8pm, and afterwards on Global Player.

The Hollywood actor is transformed into ‘La Divina’, for the upcoming biopic about 20th-century opera diva Maria Callas. 

The first glimpses of Maria, a new film set during Maria Callas’ final days in 1970s Paris, were revealed on Monday.

Angelina Jolie will play the American-born, Greek soprano in a biopic about the “tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris”, according to a press release.

Director Pablo Larraín praised Jolie’s “extraordinary preparation” for the role.

Two photos of the actor as ‘La Divina’ have been published. In one, Jolie is opera’s most famous diva, wearing a wide-brimmed lace hat – in the other, she is holding a pair of large, round spectacles to her face.

Larraín said in a statement, “I am incredibly excited to start production on Maria, which I hope will bring Maria Callas’ remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation.”  Larraín previously directed Jackie, a biopic about Jackie Kennedy who was caught in a tragic love triangle with Callas. The screenplay for Maria is by Steven Knight, who penned the hit UK series Peaky Blinders. Knight also worked with Larraín on the 2021 biopic Spencer starring Kristen Stewart.

Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022: “I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge.

“Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

The independent production has signed to a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement allowing it to begin shooting now, over eight weeks in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan. It will feature original garments worn by Callas, according to a press release.

Alongside Jolie, the cast includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Elvis) and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

Callas is one of the most celebrated operatic figures in music history. With a range of three octaves, Callas was widely hailed for her bel canto singing, and for her Verdi and Puccini interpretations.

She spent her final years living in isolation in Paris and died of a heart attack aged 53.
